Coachella Valley native Brian Girgus had worked in numerous barbershops before opening the New California Barbershop in Echo Park earlier this month. But the 36-year-old wants his barber shop to be more than just a place to have your hair cut. Girgus plans to operate a general store – stocked with everything from vintage clothes to coffee and pickles – in the back of the Sunset Boulevard storefront. He also plans to host art shows and barbecues. The shop, which is walk-in only, features a $35 haircut that includes a straight razor shave and a hot towel at the end of your cut. “You get the royal treatment: hot towels, nice smells, good times,” said Girgus. “I’m just looking to be a positive addition to the neighborhood and make an honest living by offering a basic yet very high quality hair cut and hang out.”
